Northwest Region Spotlight: Alexander Central High School
At Alexander Central High School, the Agriculture Education program and FFA has a rich history of excellence and is a source of pride in the small town due to the numerous awards, grants, and recognition of generations of students and the three current Ag teachers. Mr. Cook, Mr. Sink and Mr. Mitchell have almost 75 years of experience, collectively, teaching Agricultural Education at the secondary level and Mr. Scottie Cook was the 2023 NCATA Northwest Region Teacher of the Year. Since starting at Alexander Central, they have formed relationships within the community that have strengthened opportunities to help student achievement.
Students in the agriculture department at Alexander Central have the unique opportunity to work with the local Christian Crisis Center to donate produce grown in their local community gardens, teach elementary school children about all sectors of agriculture at the Alexander County Wake Up to Ag Day, and operate a Woodmizer Sawmill for both student and community projects. Alexander Central FFA had close to 30 teams compete in 26 different CDE contests last year including: Horse Judging, Agronomy, Dairy Judging, Agricultural Mechanics, and Nursery Landscape. The program has produced several regional officers and proficiency award winners over the years.
